  • A Strategy for a Large-Scale Seismic Risk Mitigation of Infrastructures: the Case of the Campania Region

A multi-level approach to “catalogue” existing bridges in the meaning of seismic risk mitigation policies is herein presented and discussed. In particular, the proposed methodology lead to a list of priorities for existing bridges by considering the relevance of the road which they belong, the seismic and structural vulnerability and seismic hazard sites. Based on such information it is possible to proceed to verify the structural and seismic safety and/or repair bridges by considering the economic available resources. The methodology can be considered as reference and decision support tool in earthquake risk mitigation policies for the management and maintenance, vulnerability assessment and retrofit design of existing bridges in order to preserve the safety.

  • Concezione strutturale e risposta sismica delle strutture lignee di copertura

In view of assessing the seismic vulnerability of timber roof structures, it is necessary to define evaluation criteria for the various elements and features that influence the structural response. Ths work focuses on the structural concept, particularly interesting because of the numerous existing solutions; indeed, these structures, originally conceived for vertical loads, may be more or less apt to respond to seismic action. With the classic tools of modal and response spectrum analysis the effect of the structural concept has been investigated, in order to define a basis for classification criteria. The aspects that appeared to affect positively the seismic response are a suitable association of the design parameters, according to the traditional construction practice, and the effectiveness of the connections that realize the threedimensionality of the structure.

  • Aggiornamento delle mappe di rischio sismico in Italia

Seismic risk maps updated on the basis of new data about real estate are presented in this paper. Previous maps were presented in 1996 by a specific workgroup appointed by Italian Civil Protection Department and they were used to make a list of municipalities at high seismic risk that were granted tax relief depending on vulnerability reduction interventions. Furthermore, those maps were updated with the hazard assessment developed after 1998. Real estate and population data resulted from Istat Census of 1991. In this updating, data from Istat Census of 2001 have been used, but hazard assessment and the methodology were the same of the previous maps, in order to evaluate the impact of a different structure of the real estate on risk assessment.
All the evidence makes it clear that the distribution and the overall assessment confirm the previous evaluation based on 1991 data, in spite of a 9% real estate increment, from 1991 to 2001. Specific data processing has pointed out differences in structural characteristics of the real estate from 1991 and 2001 Istat Census, reducing its estimated vulnerability, in compensation of the exposure increment due to the real estate increment.

  • Fast seismic vulnerability assessment for strategic buildings of Campania Region

In the paper a new procedure to assign residential building structure typologies to seismic vulnerability classes is showed. The procedure, developed within the activities of the Research Project SAVE (Strumenti di Analisi di Vulnerabilità degli Edifici esistenti) supported by National Depart. of Civil Protection trough GNDT- INGV, represents a quick technique that, based on «first level» data (i.e. survey forms as: Abruzzo ’84, GNDT 9/86, AeDES, etc.), evaluates the seismic structural vulnerability by assigning single structures to a building type family of which the behaviour under seismic action is expected. The procedure, although is based on «poor information», introduces several parameters that allow to take into account, in the final vulnerability estimation, all the information possibly available on the structure characteristics about the building (structure types, layout, dimensions, geometry, materials etc.). The procedure has been calibrated using a large data-base containing all the damage data surveyed in several seismic events of the past in Italy, from the Irpinia earthquake in the 1980 up to the Molise earthquake in 2002, considering roughly 165.000 buildings, selected among the over 200.000 in the DB. Finally an application of the procedure to the «public & strategic buildings» in Campania Region is reported, this has been used to define the priority-list for the best allocation of the resources assigned to the Regions from the Ordinance 3362/2003 of the Government that states the strengthening of the most vulnerable strategic buildings in the regions. The results of the punctual sample check «in situ» are reported and a very good reliability of the procedure in this case is showed.
