  • “Dolcè Viaduct”: Pier Seismic Analysis with the Italian Code and Euro-Codes

Damages due to seismic action on bridges are a direct consequence of the elastic approach of their design. The introduction of the new seismic norm in Italy and in the world have prescribed a ductile behavior for the piers subjected to action of earthquake. The bridge design based on a ductile behaviour of piers uses the for- mation of plastic hinges to reduce seismic action by dissipation of energy. The design of the “Dolcè” Viaduct, an important bridge of next realization in Verona area. This viaduct has me- dium span and composite structure steel-concrete, for it is evaluated the different security level and ductility of the seismic response depending on the configurations of the piers. The study takes into account the Euro-codes and the Italian norm.

  • Dynamic analysis of the road underpass “Martiri della libertà” in Mestre-Venice

The paper describes the dynamic behaviour of an important road underpass: the “Martiri della Libertà” road underpass in Venice, 9 Km north from the historic centre. The road underpass is a reinforced concrete structure with deep diaphragms. In this paper the different safety level has been evaluated on the basis of National and European Codes for seismic and traffic loads for two different type of structure, one with two diaphragm, the other with three. The main parameters defining the different behaviour of the structure for the different type of stratigraphy are investigated.

  • A case study of Performance Based Design according to EC8: Fixed-Base vs. Base-Isolated RC frame structures

The technique of the seismic base isolation (Base Isolation System − BIS) represents an innovative structural control system and, in particular, an important passive control system for seismic protection of structures. This technique has reached a high level of reliability and, as a matter of fact, isolated structures do have an elastic behaviour during the earthquakes, even of high intensity. This reliability is witnessed by the new seismic codes that allows for the use of BIS and provides specific design criteria. In this work, the Base Isolation System for a multi- storey reinforced concrete building, highly irregular in plan, has been considered. The Eurocodes (EC0; EC2; EC8) have been adopted and compared with the new Italian seismic code (NTC 2008). The base isolated structure has been compared to the fixed base structure and the significant benefits that the technique provides on the seismic response of the structure, with significant spin on the costs of the structure, have been highlighted.

  • «Il viadotto di silea in Veneto»: verifica sismica secondo la normativa italiana e l’eurocodice

The design of an important viaduct in Treviso (a town in Venetian area) is here described. This struc- ture, called «Silea» Viaduct, was designed following the philosophy of the new prestational codes. The viaduct, built in 2007, has medium span and composite structure. In this paper the different safety level has been evaluated on the basis of National and European Codes. The structure is provided with viscous dampers and mechanical dampers to bidirectional earthquake excitation and the main parameters defining the seismic behaviour of seismically isolated bridges are investigated.
